Army Height and Weight Calculator & Standards

Check Army height and weight standards for enlistment by age, sex, and height on the AR 40-501 chart, and see how the 2026 in-service WHtR rule differs.

Accession weight screening

Height rounds to the nearest whole inch; a half inch rounds up. This is the published initial procurement screen. Special programs, waivers, and body-composition assessments require your recruiter.

WITHIN PUBLISHED SCREENING WEIGHT

Exceeding the weight screen requires body-composition review; it does not by itself determine enlistment eligibility. Current serving Soldiers use the separate 2026 WHtR procedure.

Army height and weight standards: enlistment vs. in service

AR 40-501 paragraph 2-3 and Tables 2-1/2-2 publish the Army height and weight standards used to screen applicants for initial procurement. The 2025 administrative revisions update references and terminology; these tables retain their 2019 values. A recruiter or medical examiner applies the complete accession rules, including exceptions.

The July 2026 Army body-composition procedure uses waist-to-height ratio for serving Soldiers. See the Army body fat calculator and source register. The weight screen shown here is not a substitute for that procedure.

Questions about this tool

Why does the accession tool still ask for weight?

AR 40-501 publishes initial procurement weight screens by height, age, and sex. This is a different decision from the current in-service Army waist-to-height procedure. The page keeps those purposes explicit so a serving Soldier does not mistake an accession weight range for the July 2026 body-composition standard.

How does a half inch affect accession height?

Paragraph 2-3 rounds height to the nearest whole inch: a fraction below one-half rounds down, while one-half or greater rounds up. The recorded whole-inch height chooses the table row. This differs from the half-inch recording used by current Army in-service WHtR screening and should not be substituted for it.

Does exceeding the accession weight screen automatically reject an applicant?

Exceeding the table’s upper weight triggers body-composition evaluation under the complete accession rules; this weight lookup alone does not establish final enlistment eligibility. Special programs and waivers can require separate review. Ask your recruiter or medical examiner to apply the governing instructions to your actual application and recorded measurements.

Are the displayed male and female ranges the same?

The minimum weights in the archived tables coincide at each listed height, while upper screening weights vary by sex and age band. The tool selects the appropriate published row and column rather than estimating a range from BMI. It identifies heights outside the published range without inventing additional table rows.
